DBA Registration

A DBA is a Business Registration Certificate - Person Conducing Business Under Assumed Name or CoPartnership. This document ties the name of an individual who is conducting business as a sole proprietorship or copartnership of the name of the business. This filing is for BARRY COUNTY only! It is not shared with other counties or the State of Michigan. You must confirm that the business name you have is acceptable. The Clerk is authorized to reject any assumed name, which is likely to mislead the public, or is similar to other business names as to lead to confusion or deception. A DBA protects a business from possible name duplications by other businesses.

You must ensure that the business name is not being used by a corporation, limited liability company (LLC) limited liability partnership (LLP) or non-profit organization. All of these entities file at the State. Please see the State of Michigan website for Business Entity Searches.

DBA registrations are good for 5 years and are renewable 30 to 90 days prior to expiration.

To file a DBA by mail:
Complete the DBA Certificate (below). Note: Be sure to check the appropriate box indicating which type of filing you are submitting.
Sign the form in front of a notary public.
Mail the signed, notarized form to our office with the filing fee along with a self-addressed stamped envelope to:

The form will be processed and filed upon receipt. Two certified copies will be mailed to you via return mail.

To file a DBA in person:
Come into the office during regular business hours and complete the DBA worksheet.
Please bring your identification for our on-staff notaries. NOTE: all persons signing the DBA must be present.
Pay the filing fee.
The form will be processed and filed.
You will leave with two certified copies of the certificate.

To obtain a copy of a DBA via mail:
Send a request in writing requesting a certified copy(s). Please include the name of the business and owner, if known.
Include the appropriate fee and a self-addressed stamped envelope to:

To obtain a copy in person:
Requests accepted Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

New DBA: $10.00 (includes two certified copies for a sole proprietorship and three certified copies for a copartnership)
Renewal DBA: $4.00 (if on-time) no copy included. $1.00 for a certified copy if requested at the time of filing
Dissolution of a DBA: $5.00
Certified copy: $2.00
