Household hazardous waste (HHW) and pesticides are materials that are harmful to residents, pets, lakes, drinking water, and the environment if not disposed of properly. Local Events

Barry County holds two Household Hazardous Waste and tire collection events each year in spring and fall at the Barry County Expo Center.
Sponsored by the Barry County Solid Waste Oversight Committee with support from the Barry County Fair Board, Waste Management, Barry Eaton District Health Department, Barry County Substance Abuse Task Force, Sheriff's Department, and local pharmacies.

  • aqueous (containing water) acids and bases
  • oil-based paints
  • reactives
  • solvents
  • aerosol cans
  • automotive liquids
  • pesticides (liquids and solids)
  • light bulbs
  • automotive batteries
  • alkaline, nickel-cadmium and/or silver oxide batteries
  • liquid cleaners
  • heavy metal solutions
  • mercury-containing materials
  • motor oil
  • unused or expired medications and sharps. (Medications need to be in their original containers with the name of the drug clearly labeled.  Cross out any personal information on the containers)
  • tires (Limit 10 tires per car; only tires from households are accepted - not accepted from businesses.  First come, first serve basis until trailers are full.  Tires heavily caked with dirt will not be accepted.)

Asbestos

Hastings Landfill accepts friable and non-friable asbestos.  Call for handling instructions 269-948-6605.

Electronics

Latex Paint

Dried latex paint can be disposed of with your regular household trash.  To dry it mix with kitty litter, shredded newspaper or sawdust.  Let dry completely before adding to waste container.

Propane Tanks

Return used propane tanks to a propane dealer in your area for safe disposal.

Radioactive material

depending on the material, it may be necessary to contact the manufacturer directly for disposal instructions.

Explosives

Barry County Sheriff's Department, Hastings 269-948-4801. Call for handling instructions. 

Unknown wastes

consult with a hazardous waste company in your area that handles unidentified wastes.  Look for a disposal company that will follow EPA-compliant procedures on unknown wastes; be certain a certified technician takes a small sample, properly identifies it and it's contents and will remove the hazardous waste following Department of Transportation (DOT) and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) regulations.


Electronic Waste (E-waste) Disposal
E-waste consists of the many components we have plugged in around the house; TVs, computers/laptops, computer monitors, miscellaneous cords, mice, keyboards, printers, scanners, fax machines, tablets/e-readers, music players, game consoles, cable/satellite boxes, small kitchen appliances, curling irons, etc.
