Lost Pets
If you have lost your pet, please visit BCAC during kennel hours to look for your pet. Descriptions of animals vary from person to person; therefore we CANNOT assist with lost pets over the phone.
When visiting the shelter we recommend you bring along a photo of your pet and fill out a lost report. Stray cats are held for 4 days & dogs for 7 days before being offered for public adoption. It is recommended you visit the department at least every 3rd day to look for your missing animal.
Place an ad in the Reminder, Banner and other local publications for your lost pet, and check the found notices in our local publications. Post flyers with photos of your missing pet along with your contact information at neighborhood grocery
stores and gas stations.
People can describe an animal in so many different ways. DO NOT rely on shelter staff to make positive identification of your pet, only someone who knows the animal can do that. Keep visiting the shelter to look for your lost pet.
REMEMBER, YOUR PET IS COUNTING ON YOU!
RECLAIMING YOUR ANIMAL: If your pet is in our department there is a $12 reclaim fee* and $3 per day* is charged for room/boarding of your animal. Please provide proof of ownership, a photo or vet records are good examples. Also note that a current rabies vaccination & a current dog license will be required prior to reclaimed dogs leaving the department. (*All fees are subject to change at any time.)
Adoption Information
Adopting an animal is a serious decision requiring a life-long commitment to care for a creature that is totally dependent upon you. Pets need more than just food, water & shelter. They also need love, attention, exercise, veterinary care, training and grooming (and of course dogs need a license). We are seeking permanent homes for our adoptable animals.
Please remember that adding a new companion animal to your family is a major decision, one that requires plenty of thought and planning. It can be a long-term commitment of 10 to 15 years. Think before you adopt.
Sharing your life with a companion animal can bring incredible rewards when you're willing to make the necessary commitments of time, money, responsibility, and love—for the life of the pet. When your family is ready to add a new companion to your household, please visit our kennels to meet your new best friend! We have a wide variety of wonderful dogs and cats available for adoption.
Adoption Fees*:
DOGS: $55 maximum plus cost of sterilization. Break down of dog adoption fee is as follows: $15 adoption fee, $20 rabies vaccination for all dogs over 3 months of age, $20 license fee* for unneutered dogs OR $5 for neutered dogs. If the animal is not altered; prepay of neuter/spay is REQUIRED prior to animal leaving department. (Out of county adopters will not be licensing at time of adoption but will instead be required to purchase a license from the county in which they reside.)
CATS: $28 maximum, plus cost of sterilization. Break down of cat adoption fee is as follows: $8 adoption fee, $20 rabies vaccination if over 3 months of age, and if not altered; prepay of sterilization is REQUIRED prior to animal leaving our department.
PREPAYS: A prepay contract for sterilization must be completed by the veterinarian of your choice and the surgery paid for prior to any unaltered animal leaving the department.
(*All fees are subject to change at any time.)

Kuranda Dog Bed Fundraiser
The animals at BCAC have received wonderful gifts from many caring friends. The dogs and cats are enjoying the donations of treats, food and gently used towels and bedding.
The resting pads currently used for the dogs have begun showing their age and the staff at BCAC wishes to replace the pads with Kuranda Dog Beds. These soft, cot style beds are sturdy, chewproof and offer off the floor comfort for dogs, while still meeting shelter standards of sterilization. Our wish goal was to purchase a bed for each dog run in our facility.
Due to the desire to help the animals, many children in our community have come up with creative ways to raise money for these beds. THANK YOU for your efforts and large hearts! We've already reached the initial goal of 29 beds by receiving $1,600.00 from area children supporting this fundraiser.
Thanks to several young (3rd through 5th) kids in the Thornapple Kellogg school district, 5th grade students in Mrs. Benningfield's class at Hastings Central and 7th graders in Mrs. Langshied's class at Thornapple Kellogg Middle School, 29 beds have arrived at the shelter and the dogs now have a comfy place to sleep. Stop in to see these beds in action!
Due to the overwhelming response from the youth in our community, a new goal has been set to purchase an additional 21 beds. Our facility is designed with 'double side' dog kennels and the kids wish to have a bed on each side of the kennels so the dogs have constant comfort!
If you would like to contribute to this large effort, you may send your donation to the shelter, please note "Dog beds" in the memo section of your check. If you would like to purchase a bed, you may do so online by clicking HERE and selecting Barry County Animal Control from the drop down list. Please be aware that we are able to order these beds for a bit less than the promotion on the website so your dollars will go a little further by sending your donation to us and we can "pool" funds together.
As always, the animals and staff at BCAC greatly appreciate the support from our caring community! THANK YOU ALL!
Please stop in to see us soon!
