GENERAL SUMMARY
The purpose of this job is to provide casework functions relating to enforcement and modification of child support. Independently assesses and analyzes domestic relations cases for the purpose of enforcing support, parenting time, and review/modification of orders. Completes necessary reports and drafts orders as necessary.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.
- Supervises an active caseload, which includes monitoring cases for compliance with court orders and assessment of cases for enforcement. Makes referrals based on the needs and barriers identified for each individual case and regularly meets with customers to assess and monitor compliance.
- Prepares and investigates child support obligations and prepares recommended child support orders.
- Performs locate functions
- Investigates financial statements of litigant’s paystubs, income tax returns and other relevant documents for the calculations of child support and spousal support.
- Maintains case records and statistics, and prepares related reports.
- Responds to inquiries from attorneys, customers, and other related agencies and explains court policies and procedures.
- Initiates and/or responds to intergovernmental enforcement requests, communicates with other jurisdictions regarding order enforcement and payment inquiries.
- Prepares child support enforcement orders and prepares support order reviews for clients.
- Prepares reports and recommendations for the court when necessary.
- Educates clients on the policies and procedures, and participates in the orientation program of the Friend of the Court Office. Serves as FOC liaison to community groups and organizations.
- Conducts joint meetings with parties to assist resolution of disputed issues and orders regarding compliance with court orders.
- May serve in a back-up capacity in the absence of other office employees
- Performs related work as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Required Education and Experience
Education: Bachelor’s degree in psychology, criminal justice, social worker, counseling or a closely related field.
Experience: 1-3 years of case supervision experience preferably in a court or counseling, mental health, correctional, substance abuse agency or related area.

- Office of Child Support IV-D Policy
- State Court Administrative Office
- Friend of the Court Bureau Manual of Michigan’s Child Support Formula
- The court system and procedures used in domestic relations matters
- Other resources in the community to which the parties can be referred for assistance
- Child development, clinical issues relating to children, the effects of divorce on children, and child custody research
- State statutes, court rules and procedures related to domestic relation matters
- Federal regulations as required to process intergovernmental requests
- English grammar, spelling, punctuation
- Legal terminology and court procedures
- Principles and practices of basic bookkeeping
- Modern office procedures, methods, and computer software, equipment
Skill in:
- Verbal and written communication
- Problem solving and conflict resolution
- Microsoft Word, Excel
- Interpersonal skills necessary to develop and maintain effective and appropriate working relationships
- Performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature
