TITLE: Desktop Support Technician

General Summary:
Under the supervision of the Information Technology/GIS Coordinator, provides desktop computer support to the 200+ Barry County employees and associated offices. Installs and/or removes equipment and maintains all documentation pertaining to the equipment as well as the job’s procedures. Monitors essential network, server and desktop metrics. Responsible for maintenance of the county website.
Essential Functions:
1. Organizes and prioritizes requests for service. Responds to trouble calls regarding the computer system and repairs or works with vendor to resolve hardware problems. Works with the users regarding problems that may require contacting the vendor or network administrator. Works with user to test the solution of the problem.
2. Visits departments throughout the County to trouble-shoot, repair, and maintain data equipment problems, including, workstations, portable computers, scanners, monitors, printers, telephones, faxes, and other devices and computer components.
3. Tracks computer hardware and software inventory by staff member and workstation.
4. Monitors scheduled installation of software patches and updates, maintenance and security patches.
5. Provides minor hardware upgrades to computer hardware components by installing new microprocessors, motherboards, serial and parallel ports, video cards, soundcards, memory chips, and various other internal and external components. May also occasionally assist with network cabling projects.
6. Provides documentation on services performed, maintains repair records.
7. Responsible for maintenance and updating the county website.
8. Responsible for daily checklist of backups, network health, patch status, remote access activity.
9. Light administrative duties such as preparing vouchers, taking outside calls, and preparing shipments.

Employment Qualifications:
Education: Equivalent of two years of college level coursework in computer science.
Experience: Two years of technical experience with mid-range computers, personal computers, and peripheral equipment which included work with wide area and local area networks.
Other Requirements: Possession of a valid Michigan Driver’s License. Prefer Network Administration Certification.

Crimal Background Check and Physical will be conducted at time of hiring.
Working Conditions:
Works in office conditions, but is required to visit all County locations, including the County Jail and Animal Control, with computer and communication equipment.
Must work in confined spaces and basements to inspect or install computer and communication equipment.
STARTING BASE PAY: $14.79-17.38/Hr.
