Gun Permits/Licenses

Acquiring Gun Permits and Licenses

The Records Division is responsible for processing fingerprints for Concealed Pistol Permits, issuing Permits to Purchase and the Registration of handguns for the residents of Barry County.

If you would like to apply for a Permit to Purchase a Handgun and you are a Barry County resident, you should report to the Sheriff’s Office office during the listed times. You will need your Michigan Driver’s License or a Michigan State ID, with your current address to apply. A Permit to Purchase is issued by the Office and must be used within 30 days. This is a 3-part form with copies for Seller, Purchaser, and MSP. The MSP copy MUST be returned to the Sheriff’s Office within 10 days of purchase. This can be done in person or via regular mail. This also applies to the top MSP of the Pistol Sales Record used when purchasing a handgun by a CPL holder. It is NO LONGER NECESSARY to bring the handgun into the Office for inspection. There is a $5 Notary fee charged for gun permits.

For more information you may contact the Sheriff’s Office at 269-948-4805.

Gun Permits and Registrations

Registrations and permits are handled on a walk in basis, and normally take between five and fifteen minutes depending on how quickly the clearances come back from the state and federal systems, and how busy the office is at the time.
