Emancipation is a term used when the minor children no longer qualify for child support under Michigan Law. This is typically when a child has turned age 18 and has graduated from high school. There are circumstances that allow for child support to continue up to age 19 ½. The MiCSES computer system will send out a notice to the custodial parent prior to a child’s 18th birthday requesting verification of high school graduation. This information can be in the form of a letter from the school or a copy of a graduation announcement and should be forwarded to the Accounting Department.
